Edward “Ted” Allender joined Piedmont Airlines on the 9th of February, 1981 and was assigned to the B-727 as a Flight Engineer in Greensboro. In August of the same year, Ted became a FO on the B-737 and bid the Atlanta crew base in August of 1982. He remained on the B-737 until he upgraded to Captain in May of 1984.

Ted traveled to Amsterdam for his initial upgrade to Captain on the Fokker FK-28 and flew as Captain out of the Atlanta crew base. In 1985, Ted upgraded to the B-737 Captain and flew out of the Baltimore crew base for a year and transferred to the newly opened Charlotte crew base in 1986. Prior to the merger with US Airways, Ted upgraded to the B-727 as Captain based in Charlotte.

Shortly after the merger, Ted joined the Training and Standards Department as a B-737 Check Airman. In 1998, Ted was selected as one of the initial cadre of Check Airmen for the challenge of introducing the Airbus A320 to the airline. He received his initial Airbus training at the Airbus facility in Miami. While in Miami, the airline announced the purchase of the Airbus A330 to be delivered in May of 2000.

In 1999, Ted was again selected to the initial cadre of Check Airmen for the A330 for the upcoming introduction in May of 2000. Ted remained on the A330 until retirement (May of 2015) serving the line pilots as a Check Airman, Standards Check Airman and the Senior Check Airman. He was also the head of the Maintenance Test Pilot group and one of the acceptance pilots for new deliveries in Toulouse, France.

Ted also was instrumental in US Airways receiving approval from the FAA for ADS-B Next Gen applications. Ted flew the A330 with the FAA in attendance for US Airways to receive STC approval for the installation of these applications. These applications include SAMM (Surface Area Movement Map), ITP (In Trail Procedures), Merging and Spacing and CAVS (CDTI Assisted Visual Separation).

Piedmont Airlines gave Ted the opportunity to realize his childhood dreams of flying for a major airline. The opportunity Piedmont Airlines provided will always remain in his heart.
