Thomas Alfred Piff is the son of Central European immigrants and the first native-born American in his family. He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1980 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he worked for General Dynamics in Ft. Worth, Texas, first with the Model Test Group and then with the Advanced Design Group. In 1988 he joined the Lockheed Martin team at the Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, to work on fuel systems for the Space Shuttle. As of this writing (Fall, 2005) he is still contributing his many talents to the Hot Gas Test Group there.
Mr. Piff resides in Huntsville with his wife, Mara, and their two daughters, Laura and Emily. He is a skilled amateur archaeologist and geologist. His hobbies also include lapidary, gardening, skiing and snowboarding.
With a passion for flight and America’s future in space, Thomas Piff has earned this recognition as one of the many unsung heroes of our space program.
