The Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded to First Lieutenant Thomas B. Friedman, Air Corps, Army of the United States, Bombardment Group, Bomber Command for meritorious achievement while participating in an aerial flight as Radar Officer RCM over Nagasaki, Sasebo, and Yawata on the Island of Kyushu, Japan and over Fusan, Korea, on 21 August 1944. This was an aerial reconnaissance flight more than 2,000 miles of which was over enemy occupied territory. During this flight enemy air and group opposition was expected and probable. Due to the fact that this flight was made unescorted in daylight, unusual hazard attended it. The photographic and visual observation results of this flight were outstanding and reflect great credit to this Command and to the Army Air Forces.
