As a Staff Sergeant in Wide Band Communications in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, Thomas D. Robie dreamed of being a pilot. His love of the P38-Lightning brought us to countless air shows. Many vacations included trips to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, and of course, a day at the Garber Facility. He would listen for hours about the planes and the restoration projects that would restore them to glory. He talked often about the “new place” that would open and showcase the planes he loved to speak of. He could not wait to take our newborn son to show him “Daddy’s favorite plane.” Unfortunately, he was never able to visit the “new place” that became the Udvar-Hazy Center. He passed away before it opened. Now, each year, our family visits the Udvar-Hazy Center, and we talk about how much Tom would have loved this beautiful facility. Of course, we always take some extra time to show our son, David, his “Daddy’s favorite plane.” Tom would be proud of the Center, and we know, he would be proud to have his name honored there.
