Thomas E. Lloyd was born on 19 July 1923 in Pittsburg, Kansas and died on 24 November, 2006, in Ellicott City, Maryland.
Tom was raised by his beloved Aunt Mary and Uncle Melbourne Brown on a farm in rural Kansas. He attended Kansas City Junior and Teachers College, Kansas City, MO; Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa; and St. Mary’s College, CA.
Tom had a remarkable life of accomplishment. He started his career in service to his country as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. He graduated 1st in a class of 33 in Advanced Aeronautical Engineering at U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, MD. At a critical time in our country’s military and aeronautical history, he served as the Chief Test Pilot at Westinghouse Electric and Martin Company.
When his service was completed, Tom turned his passion to family farming, and aviation became his hobby. His family farm partnership, Patuxent Springs Farm, raised crops and beef cattle on farms in Maryland’s Howard and Carroll counties. He flew single engine aircraft out of a grass strip (Bassler’s Field) in Howard County.
Despite his love of farming, public service still called him. So Tom set out to become a country lawyer. He graduated magna cum laude from Mt. Vernon School of Law, Eastern College, Baltimore, MD. He obtained his JD from the University of Baltimore, Baltimore, MD. He founded and was managing partner of law firm Lloyd, Kane, Wieder and Willis, in Ellicott City, MD. He had a long and illustrious career as a fierce advocate of the common man. He also served in several capacities in local government and participated actively in local politics.
Throughout Tom’s life his love of God, Country, his family and the law was followed swiftly by his love of flight. While Tom flew many planes, his last and sentimental favorite was his Cessna Cardinal RG that he flew until late in life. When he could no longer fly in the left seat, his wife Eva Mae took up aviation, learned to fly and soloed in the RG so they could continue taking to the air.
Tom was a member of the Howard County and Maryland Bar Associations, and served as Vice-President and President of the Howard County Bar. Other memberships included: Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association, Howard County Farm Bureau, and society of Experimental Test Pilots.
Tom is survived by wife Eva Mae, sons Bob, Tom, Mike, and Ed Lloyd (from marriage to the late Marion Lloyd); step-children Steve Chiccehitto (Lisa), Barbara Gleim (Tracy) and Karen Nussle (Jim). At the time of his death, Tom was a beloved grandfather to nine grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren.
