    As a boy growing up on a farm in rural Texas during World War II, Mr. Griffin watched the aircraft from the airfields around San Antonio flying overhead and dreamed. During the Korean War the twenty-year-old college grad became an aviation cadet in Class 53-D. He graduated in 1953 as a distinguished cadet.

    Second Lieutenant Griffin flew the F-86E Sabre for the first time and went on to Fly F-86s in Korea and Japan with the 334th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. An extended tour saw him serving with the 44th Fighter Bomber Squadron in the Philippines, Formosa and Okinawa. After four years First Lieutenant Griffin separated from active duty and joined the Texas Air Guard to fly F-80s, F-86s and F-102As for twelve more years. Major Griffin retired in 1974 with 22 years of service.
