Thomas served his country as a flight officer in the United States Air Force piloting Lockheed C-141B transports from 1991-1997.
In 1998 he joined the civilian airline industry flying a variety of aircraft, including Boeing 727-200 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 aircraft.
