    During World War II, Vemell Kaul was in the 10th Army Air Corps, 7th Bombardment Group, 436th Bombardment Squadron. He was from Pontiac, Michigan and during his years of military service was stationed north of Calcutta, India and credited with 29 missions and 337 hours of flying in a B-24 aircraft. 23 missions were flown as a tail gunner and the last 6 as a flight engineer. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service.
