W.W. “Jack” Morris was born June 23, 1919, in Detroit, Michigan. While attending Pasadena College in Southern California, Pearl Harbor was attacked. He immediately answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the Army Air Corp. Jack initially trained as a Flight Engineer/Gunner on B-17’s. Following this, he was given the opportunity to qualify for pilot training and was soon commissioned and successfully earned his wings in March of 1943. He was selected to fly B-25 low altitude attack bombers and was subsequently assigned to the 345th Bomb Group, 498th Squadron, “The Falcons.” Jack’s squadron was the first pilot group selected to transition to the latest production B-25 “H” model which was specifically designed for anti-shipping and low level strafing. It supported a solid nose design mounting a 75mm cannon and four 50 caliber machine guns with four more 50 cals along the side of the fuselage. Because of the new design, the aircraft was flown single piloted with no autopilot. At that time, the 75mm cannon were the largest guns to be mounted and fired from a U.S. military production aircraft. The squadron deployed to the South Pacific in June of 1944 in support of the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns. He was soon assigned as a squadron flight leader and participated in a total of 43 missions throughout the South Pacific. Jack attained the rank of Captain before returning to the United States in May of 1945. After leaving the Army Air Corp, he re-enrolled in college and completed studies in Aeronautical Engineering. Following graduation, he joined General Dynamics where he worked for 38 years. Jack was appointed as Manager for Engineering Test and Evaluation at the Pomona Division. In this role, he became the first “civilian” to fire a live round from the newly developed, shoulder-launched “Red Eye” infra-red missile system. Because of his aviation background and flight test experience, he was asked to head up the Flight Department at the San Diego Convair Division. He subsequently established an internal flight test capability with several modified experimental aircraft in support of engineering development; this of the famed land and sea launched Cruise Missile and subsequent Advanced “Stealth” Cruise Missile (ACM) program. While dedicated to his profession, he also took time to serve in his church at the local, district, and national levels in strategic leadership positions and was elected to serve on the General Board of the Nazarene Church for two terms. He also served over two decades on the Board of Trustees for Point Loma University in San Diego and after his retirement from General Dynamics, served as Assistant to the President for Point Loma University. In 1991, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law Degree for his long time service to both the church and significant support to Point Loma University spanning five decades. He was married to Jewell Erlene neé Buckner in 1942. Jack and his beloved Jewell honored 59 years of marriage before his death on January 28, 2002.
