Capt. Mahurin is one of the top living Aces of the Army Air Force and of the Air Force with 24 kills. He had 10 kills in the European Theater of Operations in World War II flying a P47 with the 56th Fighter Group escorting bombers on missions to Germany. He was shot down twice and was able to return with the aid of the French underground. He fought in the Pacific Theater of Operations becoming an ace there as well. He was an ace in Korea flying an F-86 Sabre Jet which was shot down and landed upside down in the mud. He was captured and spent sixteen months in captivity suffering from a broken arm, lack of food and water and torture.
He left the service after 16 years and then worked in the aerospace industry. He now flies his Piper Cherokee with his wife Joan and speaks at air shows and conventions. He has received the following awards:
