Born July 13, 1917 in Naylor, Georgia, USA. Graduated from Naylor High School. Joined CCC. Employed as a rodman for State of Georgia, Dept. of roads. Went to Georgia Tech evenings to study air conditioning and math. Married Mary Sinia Davis on Nov. 12, 1938 in Cartersville, GA. On December 7th, 1941, after the attack on Pearl harbor, he joined the Army. Later as a cadet he learned to fly and joined the Air Force, graduated a 2nd Lt. Member of the 8th Air Force, stationed in Greenland in the Search & Rescue Dept. for those who were ferrying planes from the US to Russia. He spent 18 months in Greenland. He died Nov. 1994, a cancer victim. A wonderful husband and OSI agent, father and lawyer.
I have often wondered if I was the only wife who learned how to fly a DC-3 in an emergency in case the husband had an attack! My husband insisted I learn each movement, each light, he thought that plane was the greatest & safest for its time! I never flew I just prepared in case! Than you Mr. Byrd your grandfather was his ideal.
