    Walter Sheffield received the Distinguished Flying Cross for service with the 35th Squadron, 64th Troop Carrier Group during World War II. He began service with the Squadron in May 1940 flying C-47s. He made a transatlantic flight in August 1942 and was stationed at Ramsbury RAF Station until November 1942 when he flew to North Africa in Operation Torch, landing British paratroopers at Maison Blanche near Algiers. He later flew out of Blida, Telergma, Kairouan, Tabessa and El Djem. On July 9, 1943 He flew in the first night of the invasion of Sicily, dropping paratroopers near Gel. The 35th Squadron was recognized as one of the few that maintained formation in that night's high winds. Walter Sheffield flew out of Comiso, Sicily in August 1943, and in September he flew in a single file night drop of paratroopers into the Avelin Valley of Italy in support of the Salerno beachhead. He also flew man missions in support of the Anzio beachhead. In April, 1944 he flew from Sicily to India where he flew supply missions into the besieged Imphal Valley of Burma.
