    Warren Burns served in World War II, from June 1943 until January 1946 as a radio operator and gunner with the 346th Squadron, 99th Bomb Group (Heavy), 15th U.S. Army Air Force at Tortorella Airfield, Foggia, Italy. He completed 19 missions with Pilots Vincent Bell and Charles Bigbee, and was awarded theAir Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and two Presidential Distinguished Unit Awards. He earned five battle stars for the Europe, Africa, Middle East Campaign Ribbon.

    He served as president of the Maine Air Force Association, and as chairman of the University of Maine Reserve Officer Training Corps. He was an advisor to the U.S. Air Force Detachment, University of Maine. He was president and vice-president of the 99th Bomb Group Historical Society.
