    Willard "Bill" Winter was an aerospace engineer for 40 years, beginning at Curtis Wright Aircraft in the 1940s and continuing at McDonnell Douglas Corporation until his retirement in 1984. He made notable design contributions to early products of McDonnell Aircraft, including the F-2H Banshee and F-3 Demon. He led the fuel system design effort for the revolutionary F-4 Phantom.

    In the 1960s Bill served as Chief Engineer of the Asset research re-entry vehicle, an important prototype of the eventual Space Shuttle concept. In the 1970s he led Alternate Concept Studies for the Space Shuttle, and he concluded his distinguished career as Chief Engineer of the Suspended Maneuvering System, an airborne high-rise rescue vehicle.
