Bill had an intense interest in flight from his early days as a youth. He read numerous books on the subject, made models and “hung around” Chicago’s Midway Airport during its years of growth in the 1930s. His desires were realized in 1942 when he was accepted by the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program and concluded his “dream” as a P-38 Fighter Pilot serving in the Pacific Theatre.
