"On a recent flight, Major Newnham detected a squad of Viet Cong in the Brigade's AO. He called for gunships and kept the enemy pinned down with smoke rockets and fire from his personal weapon until they arrived. He then marked the target with more smoke rockets and his fire was so accurate that one of the rockets hit a VC, killing him instantly. While the gunships fired up the area, Major Newnham continued to orbit the target, and when the "prep" was over he directed a combat assault. The operation resulted in five VC Killed by Air and one detainee."
