    William N. Butler served with the U.S. Army Air Forces from March 1942 to November 1945. He flew 70 missions as a navigator with the 387th Bombardment Group, 556th Bombardment Squadron in B-26 Martin Marauders in the European Theater of Operations.

    As a civilian he worked for 26 years in the Air Materiel Command, Air Forced Logistics Command, and Air Force Communications Service. His career was devoted to the use of data automation in logistics and communications from the earliest computers in 1953 to the most advanced in 1997 when he retired as a GS-15 special assistant for data automation to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations in the Air Force Communications Service.
