    William Oliver Roberts, Jr. was born in Champlain, NY and resided in Lexington, VA for most of his adult years. He passed away in 1998 at the age of 76. He was married to Aminee Woods Jones Roberts, and they had three children, William O. Roberts III, Leil R. Hackett, and Trent B. Roberts.
    Mr. Roberts served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for four years as a B-25 pilot in the Asia-Pacific Theater. He earned an Air Medal, Victory Medal and theater ribbon with nine battle stars in his military service before retiring as a Major in 1947. After his military service, he was an assistant professor of physical education and director in intramural sports at Virginia Military Academy and simultaneously earned a law degree at Washington & Lee University.
    After earning his law degree, Mr. Roberts opened a law practice in Lexington, VA that he maintained until his death in 1998. He served as town and city attorney for Lexington for 28 years, town attorney for Goshen, VA for nine years, and local counsel for four years with the state Department of Highways in addition to several other professional appointments.
    He was equally involved in civic activities. He served on the Board of Directors for Stonewall Jackson Hospital, was a former president of the Lexington Kiwanis Club and former president of the Rockbridge unit of the American Cancer Society. He was also involved in his children’s lives as a past president of the Rockbridge Council of PTAs and former committeeman and treasurer of Cub Scout Pack 29.
