Soar Together at Air and Space is a monthly family-focused program from the National Air and Space Museum.

You can join us online starting Friday, May 3, or in person at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA on Saturday, May 4.

 

In Person Family Day

Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 10 am - 2 pm

Meet experts, do fun spacesuit-related activities, and explore how and why spacesuits were made the way they were. Discover how their design changed over time, and what future spacesuits will look like for astronauts traveling to the Moon and Mars.

Activities include: 

  • Meet experts: You’ll be able to talk to Jean Wright, a seamstress for NASA, Ken Kremer, retired NASA scientist, Christine Jerome, a NASA spacesuit engineer, and Cathleen Lewis, a Museum curator who’s an expert on spacesuits
  • Get up close to real spacesuits: Examine gloves, boots, and other pieces of spacesuits and learn how they protect astronauts.
  • Hear from authors and join us for story time: Meet Jennifer Swanson, author of Spacecare: A Kid’s Guide to Surviving Space, and Elise Matich, author of Sew Sister, and join us for a reading of Astronaut Handbook.  
  • And more hands-on activities!

Flights of Fancy Story Time: Astronaut Handbook by Megan McCarthy

Join us for a reading of Meghan McCarthy’s children’s book about preparing to go to space, Astronaut Handbook. We will learn about different types of spacesuits and what they are designed to do for the people who wear them. After the story, draw along with us and imagine what you would wear if you were living and working in space.

ASL interpretation will be provided during this program.
