For over 100 years, the United States Coast Guard has used aviation as a means to save those in peril and protect the U.S. from maritime threats. Join Cmdr. Chanel Lee and Cmdr. La'Shanda R. Hawkins as they discuss the victories and challenges of flying rescue and maritime enforcement missions for the military.

These trailblazing pilots were some of the first Black women to break barriers in their field by serving as aviators with the United States Coast Guard.

  • Cmdr. La'Shanda Hawkins was the first Black woman to serve as a helicopter pilot in the Coast Guard.
  • Cmdr. Chanel Lee, a pilot and aerospace engineer in the Coast Guard, was the first Black woman to fly an MH-60 helicopter and be sent to flight school.

Note: Cmdr. Jeanine Menze, who was previously scheduled to participate in this panel, will no longer be able to attend the event.
