John L. Downey was a bombardier aboard the Boeing B-29 "Laggin' Dragon" bomber. Lt. Downey was assigned to the 393rd Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group, which was stationed at Wendover Field, Utah, for training and North Field, Tinian Island, in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

This collection consists of thirty-four copy prints concerning the 509th Composite Group, 393rd Bomb Squadron, personnel and aircraft during their service at Tinian, 1945. The following crew members are featured: Robert Petrolli; John Downey; Thomas Brumagin; Harry Davis; Edward Costello; Paul Tibbets; Myron Farya; Stanley G. Steinke; John Canton; and Norman Ray. There are also images of Tinian Island, especially the North Field, and of Boeing B-29s - including nose art shots.
