Print, Woodcut on Paper, Colored, BALLOON ASCENSION NEAR HARBOR
Japanese woodcut print of balloon ascensions near a harbor. Right panel, one of three. This panel shows a large cart surrounded by a crowd of people in Western dress. This is almost certainly a second print (see A20140969000 through A20140971000) showing the scene in Philadelphia on July 14, 1860 when T.S.C. Lowe and William Paulin flew for the visiting Japanese Embassy. The large structure sitting on the wheeled vehicle may be the artist's interpretation of the enclosed basket of Lowe's Great Western balloon, which was being exhibited in Philadelphia at that time.
A20140975000 is the left panel of the scene, A20140976000 is the center panel.
