Engraved print depicting Aerostatische Maschine der Herrn Charles und Robert, December 1, 1793. A German print in which a crowd has gathered in a semi-circle to watch the ascent of Jacques Charles and Marie-Noel Robert from the Jardin de Tuileries in the first manned gas balloon. Below the balloon remains the barrel mechanism from which the balloon was filled with gas, and a cloud of smoke still lingers. Charles and Robert each carry a flag in the gondola.
