Engraved print of an Air Balloon from European Magazine, 1st March, 1789. Boat like air balloon with four large circles on either side and mast with little flag on top. Three men in ship, one carries an oar with which to steer. The Italian Jesuit, Francisco Lana Terzi de Terzi (1631-1687), had suggested an "Air-Ship" lifted by four thin evacuated copper globes. He ignored the fact that external atmospheric pressure would collapse the evacuated spheres and destroy their lifting power. Created by Digitized by Benjamin G.
