On November 23, 1935, explorer Lincoln Ellsworth, with pilot Herbert Hollick-Kenyon, took off in the Northrop Gamma Polar Star from Dundee Island in the Weddell Sea and headed across Antarctica. By December 5, 1935, Lincoln and Herbert became the first men to visit western Antarctica. Highlighted in this image are the fixed landing skis of the Northrop Gamma Polar Star.
