Rectangular box with handle on top and one side with hinged door which opens to front of experiment. The experiment side has 12 blackened compartments, four with hand-blown glass tubes containing varying measurements of flash powder of the type then used for flash photography. Each tube is closed by a stopper and protective cotton underneath. For the experiment air was pumped from the tubes, creating a vacuum within, and the tubes sealed with wax. Wires passed through the powder within the tubes and were connected to a car spark coil. This was the ignition system for the experiment.
