Bags used to collect lunar samples evolved over the course of Apollo missions. Apollo 11 and 12 astronaut's made use of weigh bags made of Teflon film. These bags proved susceptible to tears and damage and were replaced on Apollo 14 with Beta cloth bags lined with Teflon film. For subsequent missions a more sophisticated Sample Collection Bag was developed and used.
This bag is a training version of the weigh bag used on Apollo 14. NASA transferred it to the Smithsonian in 1972.
