This item is a test equipment kit from the backup Skylab orbital workshop displayed in the Museum. Skylab was launched into low Earth orbit in May 1973 and occupied until February 1974 by three-man crews on three different missions. Several onboard tool kits contained a variety of tools and supplies for basic repairs and maintenance tasks that the astronauts might need to do while in space.

NASA transferred the workshop and its equipment to the Smithsonian in December 1975.
