NASA worked with Disney•Pixar to create this packet of educational materials in support of the flight to the International Space Station of a Buzz Lightyear toy as a a part of NASA's larger "Toys in Space" educational project.
In 2008, NASA worked with Disney•Pixar to fly a 12” Buzz Lightyear action figure to the International Space Station aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (up on STS-124 and down on STS-128), while granting NASA permission to use the trademarked character in a series of on-line interactives and hard-copy educational hand-outs intended to encourage children to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). For 15 months, this action figure was aboard the ISS, being shown occasionally on down-linked videos that supported the initiative. This bound set of educational materials was developed by NASA for distribution on-line and in hard copy.
Although the materials were created by NASA as a part of the educational initiative, they were given to the Museum in 2012 by Disney•Pixar because they contain the trademarked Buzz Lightyear character.
