Red camera lens filters such as this gave Gemini astronauts a means of increasing the contrast in their images. It was part of the selection of equipment available to them for the Maurer 70mm all-purpose camera flown on the later program missions, and may have been used during a color patch experiment on Gemini XI.

NASA transferred this filter to the Museum in 1976.
