Major Pamela Melroy wore this flight suit while she was assigned to test pilot school at Edwards Air Force Base in California in the early 1990s. Commissioned into the Air Force through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) in 1983, she became a pilot and aircraft commander on the KC-10 airborne refueling tanker and flew combat missions in the Gulf War of 1990-91 before becoming a test pilot. Upon selection into the astronaut corps in 1994, she became the first female pilot astronaut to be a combat veteran. Melroy retired from the Air Force as a Colonel in 2007 before her third space shuttle mission. She logged more than 6,000 hours of flight time in more than 50 different aircraft.

She gave the Museum this flight suit and various other possessions and papers in 2018.
