This sterling silver trophy cup was presented by the citizens of Indianapolis to Dr. Goethe Link for winning a National Balloon Race in June of 1909 held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dr. Lin and J.R. Irwin won the trophies for both distance and duration in a gas balloon. Following the race, Link gave up balloon racing and focused on his career as a surgeon.
