This A1-C helmet was worn by numerous astronauts during training for the Apollo program. The A1-C helmets and suits were used prior to the selection of the suits to be used during the Apollo program, and were modified examples of those used during the Gemini program.
The helmet was constructed of fiberglass and epoxy resin and was molded to fit directly into the neck bearing disconnect. A Plexiglas visor, capable of being raised for access, was attached with pivots, and when lowered into pressure sealing position, it locked in place with a latch. Communication devices with suede-covered ear pads were incorporated into the helmet.
This example was not equipped with the visor protector fabricated of cycolac which protected the visor when it was in the open position.
Transferred from NASA in 1985.
