The Distinguished Flying Cross was established by Presidential order on January 28, 1927. The medal is awarded to United States Military personnel for heroism or extraordinary achievement during an aerial flight. This particular medal was awarded to Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault for his leadership of the Flying Tigers.
