This embroidered Apollo 17 mission patch was chosen from the Museum's collection to be carried around the Moon aboard the unpiloted Artemis 1 mission in 2022. The patch was chosen because of the symbolic connection between Artemis 1 and Apollo 17, the last Apollo Program human Moon landing in 1972.
Apollo 17 launched on December 7, 1972, and returned to Earth on December 16 after Harrison Schmitt and Gene Cernan walked on the lunar surface while Ron Evans orbited the Moon. Artemis 1 launched on November 16 and landed on December 11, 2022 after orbiting the Moon in preparation for piloted missions to follow.
Douglas Johns donated the patch to the Museum in 1995.
