Astronaut John Blaha kept records in this notebook as he tended the Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) during his stay on the Russian space station Mir from September 1996 to January 1997. The device was installed on Mir from 1994 to 1998 to measure the stability of the microgravity research environment. Crew members responsible for its periodic operation and maintenance recorded their activities in logbooks, noting such information as date and time of operation and type of activity. Typical tasks included turning the instrument on and off, starting/stopping data recording, changing disks and filters, positioning and calibrating the sensors, and trouble-shooting problems.
NASA transferred the SAMS equipment and this logbook to the Museum after their return from Mir.
