Astronauts have to be prepared to make emergency landings in jungles, deserts or oceans. This kit was carried in Gemini IV, which made a historic four-day mission, June 3-6, 1965, with astronauts Jim McDivitt and Edward White. On this mission, White became the first American to make a "spacewalk."

Originally installed in command pilot McDivitt's ejection seat, this kit came from NASA to the Smithsonian along with the spacecraft in 1967. Included are a survival radio, pocket knife, signaling mirror, shark repellent, seawater desalting tablets, sunscreen, soap, sunglasses, first aid kit, and other items.
