Cmdr. Kenneth Whiting received this sword upon graduating from the Naval Academy and used it during the USS Langley's (CV-1) commissioning ceremony in March 1922, when he took command of the ship. One of the most experienced aviators in the Navy, he learned to fly from Orville Wright in 1914 and led the first operational naval aviation units during World War I. He was primarily responsible for the creation of the aircraft carrier Langley and made the first catapult launch from its deck. Whiting went on to command the carrier Saratoga and held command and leadership positions in naval aviation until his retirement in 1940.
