Astronaut Bruce McCandless was the first man to test NASA's Manned Maneuvering Unit or MMU. In 1984, he floated alone in space for almost six hours before returning safely to the spacecraft.The experimental MMU evolved into a much smaller device, now built into every astronauts' spacesuit called the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue or SAFER.
