Space exploration is an exciting way to illustrate the interdependence of science, engineering, and technology in the real world. Here are some materials you can use to enhance classroom lessons. These examples illustrate the application of scientific knowledge in the development of spacesuits and the engineering behind improving space technologies.

These materials have been chosen to support the Next Generation Science Standards, in particular, Core Idea ETS1: Engineering Design and the Common Core’s Grades 6-12 Literacy in Science and Technical subjects.

The purpose of each of the short PowerPoints is to examine two objects as different engineering approaches to solving a challenge of space exploration. Each object is placed briefly in historical context, and PDFs or links are provided to technical readings about each object in Technical Readings.
