Enjoy family activities all about high-speed flight, from racing fast to going supersonic! Programs and activities will help learners explore planes that go fast: in racing, in the military, and in commercial aviation. Visitors will learn about the different speeds and abilities of airplanes. Take a look at these resources and discover which airplanes are the fastest for transportation!

This program is part of the Soar Together @ Air and Space series.

Getting There...First

The first person on the Moon, the first person to swim the English Channel, the first person to Mars... we like to get there first! In this series of challenges, figure out which plane is the fastest and will cross the finish line first. Our planes go up against each other in a series of fictional races: a 100 mile dash, a transcontinental race, a transatlantic flight, and an around the world contest!

These challenges are meant for all ages. Try them here!

Types of High Speed Flight

Aeronautics curator Bob van der Linden explains the differences between subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and even hypersonic flight.

Shhhh. The Science of Stealth

Wonder Woman has the invisible jet, Batman has the silent batwing, and the military has the B-2 and the F-117. Learn about actual stealth aircraft and the science behind making a sneaky flying machine in this new STEM in 30 episode!

At the Air Show Flights of Fancy Story Time

Gather your little ones for story time with the National Air and Space Museum. Museum educator Ann Caspari will read the original story At the Air Show. After the story, make simple kites that you can take outside and fly. Be sure to bring paper, tape, popsicle or craft sticks, and yarn or string (you might want markers or crayons to decorate the kites!).

Soar Together @ Air and Space is made possible by the generous support of Northrop Grumman.
