The Landsat 8 satellite captured this image over Sakura-jima on May 21, 2015. Japan’s most active volcano, it erupts several hundred times each year. Most of the eruptions are small, but larger ones have produced ash plumes that rise at least a 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) above the summit.
The plume in the image reached a height of 5,200 meters (17,000 feet).
