On September 10, 2015, NASA started releasing the latest high-resolution images of Pluto returned from the New Horizons spacecraft. Captured during the July 14 flyby of the dwarf planet, these close-up images reveal the icy surface in amazing detail.
Taken from a distance of 18,000 kilometers (11,000 miles), the image provides a near-sunset view across Pluto’s surface. To the east is Sputnik Planum, an area covered with bright, smooth, icy plains. To the west are rugged ice mountains with peaks up to 3,500 meters (11,000 feet) high.
