Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan vanished in the South Pacific on June 2, 1937, while en route from New Guinea to the Hawaiian Islands via Howland Island. They used an antenna similar to this later model in their attempt to locate Howland Island. The loop worked by manually turning the crank on the controller until a “null” or point of low-signal strength was found.
