    In this image of a shadowed rock, named Sandia for a mountain range in New Mexico, scientists were struck by the form and contrast created by the low angle of illumination. Throughout the MER missions, the viewing geometry and lighting have been optimized for science goals, often with aesthetically pleasing results.
