The F3F-1 was designed as a replacement for the F2F which had stability issues. The contract for the F3F was placed in 1934 even before deliveries of its predcessor had begun. The F3F served from 1936 to 1941 and was the last biplane fighter delivered to the U.S. Navy. Leroy Grumman arranged the donation of this model which was made by his company. It carries the marking of VF-2, the "Flying Chiefs".
