Lunar Rock with Zap Pits

The small white patches on this lunar rock are called “zap pits.” Zap pits are where tiny meteorites have created tiny craters surrounded by circles of melted material. The smoother part in the center of the photo is where a piece of the rock broke off—showing the surface below with almost no zap pits.
