    Major artifacts are prepared for display in the original Milestones of Flight gallery just months before the opening of the National Air and Space Museum on July 1, 1976. Pictured on the floor are (from left to right) the Gemini IV spacecraft, Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia, and Mercury Friendship 7.  Hanging objects are (from left to right): Ryan NYP Spirit of St. Louis, Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis," 1903 Wright Flyer, Mariner 2 spacecraft, and the North American X-15.
