Thaddeus Lowe's tethered ascent in a gas balloon attracted the support of President Lincoln in 1861 and led to the creation of a balloon corps for the Union Army. This plaque commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lowe's ascension was presented to the National Air and Space Museum by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) on June 11, 2011. From left to right are Thaddeus Lowe reenactor Kevin Knapp; National Air and Space Museum associate director for collections and curatorial affairs, Peter Jakab; and AIAA executive director, Robert Dickman.
