    Jupiter-C

    The Jupiter-C rocket, a modified Redstone missile, launched the first U.S. satellite, Explorer 1, on January 31, 1958. In this photo, a Jupiter-C is displayed outside the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries building as part of “Rocket Row” in the mid-20th century. (Smithsonian Institution)
